Mazda is warming to the diesel cause with a 143bhp version of its 3 or Axela hatchback, which will be introduced on February.

The Mazda 3’s 130mph variant is designed to boost performance of the vehicle so as to compete tightly in the segment where Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Peugeot 307 rule. At present, the oil-burners of Mazda 3 are relatively mild-mannered at 90hp and 108bhp 1.6-litre versions. The versions represent only 10 percent of Mazda 3s sold. D Sport, the sophisticated Mazda 3 diesel engine with 6-speed manual gearbox and lots of mid-range punch, is capable of running 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds.

According to auto analysts, next year will mark a significant milestone for diesel family hatchbacks. There is an expected general move of the automakers in connection with the matter. As a fact, a 175bhp Renaultsport Mégane and a 180hp derv version of the Corolla-replacing Toyota Auris are on their way to etch their respective milestones in diesel technology.

Aside from concentrating on Mazda diesel engine parts, the automaker is also crossing its finger for the launch two-row, 5-passenger CX-7 and seven-passenger CX-9 crossovers. With the stigma attached to the Cougar Ace misfortune, the automaker has to be more cautious about shipping vehicles. Recently, Mazda has shipped their first batch of brand new Mazda CX-9 crossovers from Hiroshima to North America. The vehicles are aboard Coral Leader car carrier. Said crossovers are expected to reach the United States before January next year.

It can be recalled that Cougar Ace, a car-carrying vessel, nearly capsized in off the Aleutian Islands in July this year. Said vessel was carrying Mazda 3s, CX-7s and other vehicles of the automaker. With the present shipping, the automaker hopes that it will be a much less eventful crossing.

Mazda is proving it is still hot on the wheels. With the introduction of CX-7 and CX-9 crossovers at the 2006 New York International Auto Show, Mazda is positive that a bountiful auto market share can be had. CX-9 Mazda auto body parts are especially engineered for the North American market.

“The North American market continues to play a leading role in Mazda Motor Corporation’s global future and financial health,” said Jim O’Sullivan, CEO of Mazda’s North American Operations.

In the automotive industry, the Europeans have long patronized the diesel engine and they prefer smaller more economical automobiles. Meanwhile, North Americans who usually carry five people in their cars prefer a minivan and seven-seat SUV. The problem is that the minivan’s polluted brush infects the driver and big SUVs are massive gas consumers. There are city-friendly substitutes now. The Kia Rondo EX V6 Luxury takes on the Mazda5 GT, both offering a minimum of five-plus seats and delivering a spacious cargo area when no one or nothing is occupying the third row.

The two vehicles are stunningly similar. However, they are different right down to the sharp-edged flashing on the glove box door. Seating constitutes the most visible similarity, wherein the Mazda5 has six in a 2+2+2 configuration, while the middle row of Kia has a seventh spot.

Both cars also yield huge flexibility as well as cargo capacity. However, Kia’s headrests in the second row have to be removed first when the middle and third rows flat need to be folded. As regards the cars’ cargo-carrying capacity, Mazda Motor and Kia Motor used different ways to compute the available relative space.

When the third row is moved down, the space produced is almost four times the original. When the centre row is flat, the Rondo is made available up to 73.4 cubic feet. Visually, the Mazda 5 has almost the same space as the Rondo, but its overall height may be slighted affected by its roofline.

As far as accommodations are concerned, both cars have a close fight. Kia has considerably more legroom, knee room and headroom spaces in the third row. The Mazda 5 also has a hard plastic trim piece on the headroom. However, this car has seats that are higher off the floor (270 millimetres compared to the Kia’s 230 mm), which makes it quite more comfortable than the other car.

On both cars’ second row, seats are comfortable and can be moved back and forth. When the third row is vacant, the back seat can be moved and the middle-row seats can be pulled forward, which means more stretch-out space.

While the Mazda has few nice touches like a storage bin under the left middle seat and a handy tray/net under the right, Kia counters those with functional roof rails.

Up front, there are minimal differences between the two. The cars’ driving positions are good, visibility is also good (both feature triangular windows at the A-pillar that reduces what would be a bad blind spot) and the entire layouts are logically conceptualized. Both have air conditioning (a $1,100 option on the Mazda5), great audio packages and power locks, windows, mirrors and sunroofs. The only noticeable difference is the manual adjustment for Mazda’s cloth seats and the power adjusters for the Kia’s heated leather buckets.

The doors also depict differences. The Rondo comes with four conventionally hinged doors while Mazda 5 is available with sliding rear doors. Therefore, the Mazda is easier to load when one is parked in a tight area. The sliding doors deter access to the third row on the down side due to the eating of the leading edge into the way of entry.

On the road, both cars are not like larger minivans or SUVs. As usual, a minimal body roll (both use anti-roll bars front and back) is present as well as any under steer. Both are also available with fitted large tires as well as anti-lock brakes. The Mazda 5 GT uses P205/50R17s, while the Kia uses a 225/50R17s.

Bigger differences are in the power train. The Mazda has a 2.3-liter four-cylinder and a four-speed manumatic (a combination of manual and automatic). The Rondo EX V6 is run by a 2.7L V6 that drives a five-speed manumatic. The base Rondo EX is available with a 162-hp, 2.4L four and a four-speed ******. To reach 100 kilometers, the Mazda needs 9.3 seconds, and 7.6 seconds to make the 80-to-120-km/h passing move. Meanwhile, the Rondo’s V6 engine attains the same performance more quickly in 8.2 and 6.1 seconds, respectively.

The horsepower of the two also has a huge difference. The Mazda yields 153 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm while the Kia has 182 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The Kia has extra gear and is also gives more silence at highway speeds.

The fuel economy of the two is in close fight. The Mazda5 consumes 11.2 liters for every 100 km in the city and 8.3 L/100 km on the highway while the Kia is rated at 11.8 L/100 km in town driving and 7.9 L/100 km on the highway.

Regarding safety features, the Rondo has standard traction and electronic stability control systems – some of the car’s advantages over the Mazda 5. Nonetheless, both cars come with front and side seat-mounted air bags as well as drop-down side curtains and active headrests.

In summary, both the Mazda 5 and the Kia Rondo outcast any SUV; both have rear seats that are usable; both are stunningly designed and reasonably priced.

Now, it’s your turn to decide which is better. Which is which?

Do you remember that very long pick up truck?

The Drifter was first introduced in 1961. But its latest generation is now known as the Mazda BT-50 which is soon to be launched in South Africa’s competitive automotive market.

Doreen Mashinini, the Mazda Marketing Manager, said that their company’s goal in developing the new Mazda pick up was to get the qualities that gained the previous generations of the Mazda B-Series pickup praise and distinctions from around the entire auto industry. He explained that they simultaneously need to adopt the true spirit of Zoom-Zoom by creating a new magnitude of driving standards and pleasure.

The manager added that the BT-50 comes with a complete improvement of the exterior as well as the interior. The company claims that the pick up is redesigned in order to persuade the customers who love adventures, and at the same time in order to offer practicality and other wonderful benefits.

The newly developed MZR-CD 3.0 direct-injection common-rail turbo diesel engine is matched to with the established 2.6-litre petrol and 2.5-litre turbo diesel units. The 3.0-litre power plant yields a claimed 115kW at 3200rpm and offers a maximum torque of 380Nm at 1800rpm. A new five-speed manual transmission has been adopted so that the greater power and torque generated by the MZR-CD unit will be supported.

Some of the features that will be available are the 4W-ABS and EBD systems. Some models will come with dual front airbags plus new side airbags that would protect the head as well as the chest when a crash occurs.

Mashinini concluded that the Mazda BT-50 is set to be the most powerful, comfortable sports activity vehicle Mazda has ever introduced in its entire existence in the industry.

The Mazda BT-50 will be locally and officially launched on July 2007.

About Mazda B-series

The Mazda B-series is also known as the Mazda Drifter. It is a 2-door pick-up truck that was first manufactured in 1961 by Mazda Motor Corporation, owner of Mazda OEM parts. The mark 7 is the current model, which was initially built in 1999 and can be manufactured with one of four body styles and one of two engines.

Mazda has used form first B-Series pickup truck the engine displacement to determine the name. In effect, the B1500 had a 1.5 L engine, and the new B4000 has a 4.0 L V6. Mazda used the ‘Proceed’ name in the Japanese market on the car’s compact pickup trucks. Moreover, another line of larger trucks is available which is called the ‘Mazda Titan’. Other names used for the pick up series include ‘Mazda Bravo’ in Australia, ‘Mazda Bounty’ in New Zealand), ‘Mazda Magnum’ / ‘Thunder’ / ‘Fighter’ in Thailand, and ‘Mazda Drifter’ in South Africa.

Mazda’s 33.4% of controlling interest is controlled by the Ford Motor Company. And as a result, the sharing of the Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger are basically the same. Since 1970s, the Ford Courier name is also used and the line continues today in both Australia and New Zealand.

Nonetheless, the public should be reminded that the Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger twins that are marketed in North America are unrelated to the ones sold elsewhere. These vehicles are built by Mazda and the models in North America are developed by Ford.

These are engineered by Mazda, whereas the North American models are developed by Ford.
