In a report in The Auto Channel, Steve Purdy, one of the site’s writers, shared his experience driving a 2008 Mazda CX9 test vehicle. June 5 is World Environment Day and on this special day environmental issues and awareness takes the center stage. Motor vehicles have always been accused of increasing environmental hazards. Aside from that the Hiroshima-based automaker is also working on a new low solvent content paint in partnership with paint manufacturers that when applied using high- precision coating equipment will not only increase coating efficiency but will also reduce VOC emissions by 50 percent.

Mazda is also engaging in a continuous research and analysis to develop vehicles that can conserve energy, eliminate air and water pollution, reduce waste and minimize noxious chemical emissions. Mazda makes use of an effective and systematic operation system that efficiently utilizes resources and reduces hazardous wastes.

Overall the systematic process that Mazda employs ensures that all of its environmental goals are smoothly achieved. Mazda also provide its employees with trainings to raise their environmental awareness plus it also encourages its staffs to gain public qualifications related to environment. Mazda Corporation even goes as far as providing environment education programmes which are also designed for specific to various job profiles.

Earlier this week, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) announced that it had a 2 percent drop in its May 2007 sales as compared to its sales the same period last year.

However, despite such decline in the Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), Mazda Canada, Incorporated announced the company’s best-ever May sales that amounted to 10,312 representing a 20 percent increase of over the same period last year; Mazda de Mexico also had its best-ever month of May with sales of 1,503, which is a whopping 277 percent increase; and Mazda North America reached the sales of 38,603 representing an increase of 5.9 percent.

Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO, said that consumers are cautious about the things they purchase due to the continued uncertainties in housing, fuel prices and interest rates. He further said that these quirky times have more of an effect on smaller companies like Mazda than they might have for larger companies, as depicted on Mazda’s sales gains and losses for this year.

The MAZDA3 is leading the volume of the company. Its sales amount to 11,316 off three-percent from last year. Even with minimal incentive support, the vehicle remains a sales success for the company in its fourth year of production. As of May 2007, MAZDA3 sales are up 20.8-percent.

Meanwhile, the MX-5 Miata announced sales of 1,959, which is up 7.1 percent year-over-year. Since 2001, these sales are so far registered as the best May. The MX-5 Miata is available as both a soft-top and Power Retractable Hard Top model. With more than 850,000 sold since 1989, the vehicle is the best-selling two-seat roadster of all time.

Mazda Motor Corporation, maker of quality Mazda wheelsMazda wheels, has recently released its updated Spiano micro-mini models, known for their friendly exteriors and comfortable interior cabins at Mazda Autozam, Mazda and Mazda Anfini dealerships throughout Japan.

The Mazda Spiano is a retro-styled kei car with a 5-door hatchback body, manufactured since 2002 by Mazda for the Japanese market only, after being marketed first by Suzuki as Suzuki Alto Lapin under an OEM agreement. The Spiano is based on Suzuki’s popular Alto kei car. The Spiano has a very distinctive, boxy shape – which is quite popular with female buyers in Japan.

The updated Spiano models offer newly designed seat and door trim fabric, an improvement which, according to the company press release, renders a fresh new atmosphere to the car’s interiors. The XS grade has a new chrome front grille, and the Spiano GS includes newly added split rear seats.

Despite the strict quality control that the Hiroshima-base automaker is employing on the production of its vehicles still there are defects or flaws that seem to slip undetected and unfortunately it is only when customers start complaining that such defects are discovered.

And just recently Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that it will be recalling more than 280,000 cars in Japan due to defects. This is currently the biggest vehicle recall of the automaker on record in Japan.

Mazda will recall 287,987 Demio and Verisa compact models produced between June 2003 and July 2006. The defects were found to affect the clutch systems and coil springs in the suspensions according to Mazda spokeswoman Aya Takahashi. She also added that so far there were no injuries or damage that have been reported but of course the automaker will not wait until for their customers to get hurt so they are announcing a recall.

The automaker will conduct the repairs for free however it did not specify the total cost of the current recalls.

Mazda spokeswoman Takahashi further stated that there are some 25,559 Demios much popularly known as Mazda2 overseas that were exported during that time. These cars are not included in the domestic recall but Mazda assured that it will handle the defects of exported models inline with local regulations.

Out of the 25,559 exported Demios, 20,850 were shipped to Australia, 1,166 vehicles were taken to New Zealand, 1,147 to Singapore, and 262 units to Hong Kong. The present 280,000 recall is the largest recall in Japan ever since the Mazda has began taking recall data in 1994 explained Takahashi. She said that the company’s previously recorded recall was for 162,405 vehicles which were in March of 2004.

One of the causes of the present recall is related to the coil springs with coatings that can be removed easily attributed to the inappropriate installation of the parts said Takahashi. The danger of this is that the coil will rust but the worst scenario is that it will break and might cause accident.

Another problem pertains to the material used to cap the hydraulic oil used in the clutch system since it could leak causing the clutch not to function properly.

Mazda Is not the only Japanese automaker that is experiencing an increasing number of recall this is because once defective products are found in a certain model it usually affects other models since usually this same parts like for example Mazda headlights are often used for multiple models among automakers.

Last March, Honda Motor Co. has also announced a recall of more than 290,000 vehicles from its 13 models. The reason for the recall was to repair a manufacturing defect that could stop the cars’ engines.

The Toyo Cork Kogyo Company, founded in 1920 in Hiroshima, Japan, used the name “Mazda” for its first three-wheeled truck, built in 1931. Company founder Jujiro Matsuda chose the word “Mazda” because it was the name of the Zoroastrian god of good and light. Work on a small sedan began in the late 1930s, but development was halted so the company could pitch in with Japan’s war effort.

By 1960, the first Mazda automobile – the R360 coupe – was developed, and the company’s foray into the production of passenger vehicles began in full force. Other landmark developments were soon to follow. Mazda began selling cars in the U.S. in 1970. In the early part of the decade, the automaker rolled out the RX-2. In 1979, the Ford Motor Company purchased a 25 percent stake in Mazda after the Japanese company encountered a number of financial difficulties.

The 1980s was a decade of rebirth for Mazda. The company officially took on the Mazda name (though all its vehicles since its launch in the ’20s have carried that brand). The 1990 model year saw the launch of a car that would prove a huge hit for Mazda: the MX-5 Miata. However, save for the Miata, the company’s vehicles experienced declining sales in the U.S., and the company’s fortunes suffered as a result.

The new millennium has seen Mazda regain its stride. The automaker has invested in new development, with impressive results. New models like the Mazda 3, Mazda 6 and RX-8 have broadened the company’s customer base and won over a whole new generation.

The latest Mazda model, the 2007 CX-9 is a seven passenger SUV. It incorporates an interior of sophisticated elegance with class leading space and unmatched versatility. It rides on the class’s longest wheelbase to provide easy access to its three row seating. The interior will impress all buyers with its space, utility, versatility and premium features. The car is powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine, with 250 hp and approx. 240 lb-ft torque. This is paired with a standard six speed Sport A/T automatic transmission, which provides optimum acceleration. Also available are the front wheel drive or Mazda’s Active Torque Split all wheel drive system.

The 2007 CX-7 is a highly styled crossover SUV with the soul of a sports car. Produced entirely on Mazda derived platform, this five seater embodies an astute blend of sports car verve and SUV practicality. External features include prominent front fenders, A-pillars rooted at the body’s leading edge, a sharply raked windshield and Mazda’s signature five pointed grille. The CX-7 is fitted with a turbocharged and intercooled 2.3 liter four cylinder direct injection gasoline engine, producing 244 horse power and 258 lb-ft torque. It is equipped with a six speed Sport A/T automatic transmission with an optional manual mode and independent rear multi-link suspension with stabilizer bar. Other options offered include the Anti-lock Brake System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, the Dynamic Stability Control and traction Control System.

For 2007, the Mazda 6 Sports Sedan gets even better with a new trim grade structure, and added standard content that includes Anti-lock Brake System and Traction Control. This line up, be it the sleek Mazda 6 Sports Sedan or the functional mid size 5-Door or the versatile Mazda 6 Sport Wagon, suits every buyer’s needs and lifestyle. Some of the enhancements to this set for the model year 2007 are auto dimming inner mirror and Homelink standard on Grand Touring, and side air bags with side curtains.

The Mazda 3, the perfect sedan for an active lifestyle, has received many exterior changes for the 2007 model. European sophistication, high performance, advanced technology and best in class safety are the constituents that make Mazda 3 a leader in the compact sedan segment. This year sees the release of the Mazda 3 5-door, a sporty hatchback targeted to appeal to the youth. The 2007 B series remains the rough and rugged compact pickup truck it always was. It is available with either of a 2.3 liter I-4, a 3.0 liter V6 or a 4.0 liter V6 engine. All versions are available with either a five speed manual or a five speed automatic transmission. Overall, the 2007 model remains largely the same as before.

There are affordable cars, and then there are cars that offer thrilling performance. Rarely do the two ever converge, but Japanese automaker Mazda has made it a tradition of coming up with vehicles that combine both of these eminently desirable traits.

Zoom, zoom, zoom… Do you remember the old Mazda RX-7 or the ever popular autocross champion Mazda Miata? Mazda cars have always focused on exhilarating performance, as it is in fact the hallmark of their brand. Mazda was actually the first to put the performance benefits of Wankel’s rotary engine to work in consumer production vehicles; now today the Renesis rotary engine which is found in the amazing new Mazda RX-8 has the title of International engine of the year.

With all of these choices, which is the best choice for you? Well to clearly identify that you need to take a trip down to your local Mazda shop and test drive a few, stop by Mazda parts and service to look over your choice of accessories, as once you have a Mazda you will have to make it your very own. There are so many ways to dress up and make your Mazda stand out in the crowd; it would truly be a shame not to take advantage of them.

Whether you are in Mazda USA, Mazda Canada, or Mazda Japan, you will find a high quality well performing vehicle for your needs. Unfortunately for you United States and Canada folks, you will have to take a backseat on the Mazda Bongo, which will be primarily sold in Japan. We’re talking kitchen units, fold out beds, and elevated roof for heightened adult comfort. Great comfort, decent economy, and a look that will bring you back to the days of tie dye and flowers in your hair, that is what is know as the Mazda Bongo.

Mazda is not all performance cars and hippy vans of course; in fact there is quite a line of classy family coupes and sedans that would great in just about anyone’s driveway. The Mazda Protege, also known as the Mazda 323 has been around since 1976 when it was first introduced as a rear wheel drive economy based compact. Built to last the Mazda Protege is not as of yet extinct, but has been promoted as the all new Mazda 3.

The all new Mazda 3 has a much roomier feel these days, and the engine choices will have you humming the entire way to work. They are all around great cars for everyone from your father to your teenager. The Mazda 3 is a definite winner. But if three is this good; you just have to wonder what the six could be.

The Mazda 626 came in around the same time as the 323, and was considered to be a moderately upscale compact with more flair and comfort than the 323. Just a few years later the Mazda 626 would be called Motor Trends import car of the year, and Mazda was definitely looking like they were going to be around for awhile. Now if a sport coupe was more to your liking then all you had to do was remove the last two numbers, and the Mazda 6 was the car for you.

The Mazda 6 was a rather nice performer compared to the previous 626, and could be woken up even more with its optional 2.2 liter turbo engine. Sold to the consumer at various trim levels the Mazda 6 definitely had a sporty feel; with a leather interior, 3-way adjustable suspension, ABS brakes, and electric sunroof the Mazda 6 was albeit not as sporty as the Mazda RX-7, but was definitely the next best thing. Now if ripping the streets is not your thing and an occasional romp through the trails is more your speed, then the Mazda tribute, which is actually based on the Mazda 626 platform, should be your weapon of choice.

The Mazda Tribute is a small crossover SUV, designed for the city folk with a country heart. With a four or six cylinder engine and firmer ride, the Tribute makes a great all around family transporter. But once again, Mazda did not quit here. Today’s buyer now has the option of the all new Mazda CX-7, which is considered to be “the SUV you never saw coming”. Sleek, Muscular, and performance car handling brings the CX-7 into the next millennium singing “Zoom, zoom, zoom” all the way to the grocery store!

Mazda has uncovered its summer vehicles – the limited edition 3 and 6 models, which will all be on sale this month.

Mazda 3 Tamura

The Mazda 3 Tamura has a 103bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine that is suited to a five-speed gearbox. Body-colored sports styling kit, front fog lamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, a chrome exhaust trim and an option of two colors – Aurora Blue Mica or Galaxy Grey Mica – are featured in this vehicle.

It is limited because only 700 of these vehicles are being built with a market cost of £13,795 – a £455 increase from the standard car. However, according to Mazda, £2835 would be the normal cost of additional accessories.

Mazda 6 Tamura

Powered by a 145bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine to fit in a six-speed gearbox, the Mazda 6 Tamura features a sporty body-colored styling kit, front fog lamps, chrome exhausts, 17-inch alloy wheels and an option of three paint colors: Stormy Blue Mica, Tungsten Grey Mica or Silver Contrail metallic paint.

This model will only have 1200 units and will cost £15,995 – a £315 increase from the price of standard TS. But Mazda says that anyone who would want additional equipment, a person will spend £3441.

Both the Mazda 3 Tamura and 6 Tamura cars are patterned on the five-door hatchback TS models. They also both have a body kit and alloy wheels, and will their sale this month.

Mazda 6 Kumano

The Mazda 6 Kumano, that uses 145bhp 2.0-litre petrol and 141bhp 2.0-litre diesel 6 hatchback, will also be offered in limited number this summer.

Patterned on the five-door TS2 model, the Kumano comes with upgraded interior and exterior trim. This car features blue and black seat trim, alloy wheels and an option of Titanium Grey Metallic or Stormy Blue Mica paint.

In petrol form with only 280 limited examples, the 6 2.0 Kumano costs £17,550 and £18,650 for the diesel with only 120 examples. Theses prices show an increase over the base model of £370 and £380, respectively. But an added package will cost £925.
